Hi Jonas!
What did you study?
I completed a Bachelor’s degree in Economics and Business Administration from Aarhus University School of Business and Social Sciences in the summer of 2020.
What do you do at Precis?
My current role at Precis is Tech Product Owner and Senior Data Advisor, which are two quite different, yet somewhat related roles.
In my Tech Product Owner role, I work in the Tech Department, where I have the main responsibility of ensuring the Technology products that we build brings the most value possible to Precis. That means coordinating development plans with the Tech team and managing stakeholder expectations from the rest of the company while working to define the overall direction that we want to take our technology strategy.
In my Data Advisor role, you could say that I consume the tech that I help build in the Tech Team. The Data Advisor role is primarily focused on supporting the Marketing Teams in Data heavy projects with the clients, where I help structuring and managing complex data implementation projects.
What’s the best thing about your role?
The best thing about my role as the Tech Product Owner definitely has to be being able to build cool things that provide value to both our clients and my colleagues internally in the company.
As for the Data Advisor role, the best thing about my role is talking to clients and helping them overcome their challenges by helping them understand and utilize their already existing data.
How has your development journey been since you joined?
I joined in the winter of 2018, back when Precis Aarhus was nothing more than 5 desks in a corner of the Copenhagen office. Since then we’ve grown to almost 30 people working out of our third office space in Aarhus.
Personally, my development journey has been fast-paced with a quite steep learning curve, which I think has been great. I started as a student worker, while I was still studying for my bachelor degree and today I have quite a senior role with responsibilities I wouldn’t have imagined 3 years ago.
What are Precis key strengths and key challenges as a workplace?
I think one of the key strengths that Precis has, very much relates to the development journey above. There’s an incredible amount of trust in everyone’s ability to solve the challenges put in front of them – no matter the seniority.
This trust in even the most junior employee to be able to carry out large, complex tasks without being micromanaged makes it possible, for anyone interested, to constantly push one’s boundaries and learn new things.
As for the challenges of Precis, I think the main one is the fact that a lot of the internal processes are quite unstructured, because as one of my favorites of the Precis principles state “we believe good judgment and transparency beat rules and hierarchy“. Because of this, it can be quite difficult for someone who likes to work under a strict set of rules to navigate the ever-changing nature of the work that we do in Precis.
What are the main things you’ve been taking with you from your studies?
My studies of Business Economics wouldn’t normally translate directly into digital marketing as a field, since none of what was taught at the university had anything to do with doing great PPC marketing. However, at Precis, we believe that marketing should integrate with the rest of the business as granular as possible. That’s where my Business degree comes into play.
What I learned at university about things like managing product costs, optimizing for margins, understanding logistical challenges – basically anything about how the business is run – has helped me ensure that the marketing decisions and recommendations we make to our clients reflect an understanding of the entire business rather than just how to get the most traffic to the website.
